Jim Bryant joined the Navy on December 30, 1954, the day after his 17th birthday. He was anxious to go on active duty. Seaman Recruit Bryant reported to Basic Training in San Diego, California in January of 1955. He remained on active duty until 1975 when he retired as CWO3.
